Buddy Walk® 2014

buddywalk The cool, dreary, October day had nothing on Roswell’s 10th Annual Buddy Walk®! Not only did 790 registered walkers show up, there were over 850 people present at the Spring River Park and Zoo for the event. Miss New Mexico, Jessica Burson, presented medals to each advocate and encouraged hundreds of walkers. She wasn’t the only volunteer! Forty-five individuals gave of their time and energy to make the day a success – and that doesn’t even begin to count the cheerleading squads from Goddard and Roswell High and Mesa Middle School who stood along the route and cheered on the walkers. It also doesn’t count the enthusiastic Jazzercize ladies who helped get our blood pumping or the Assisteens of Chaves County who passed out cupcakes, gave temporary tattoos and danced with the kids! Literally hundreds of volunteers had a hand in making the day a huge success. buddywalk2

$49,478 was raised for the Down Syndrome Foundation of Southeastern New Mexico. A huge thank you goes out to the team of Gabriel Nanz, the largest fundraising team, bringing in $2,079. MiKayla Delgado’s team, “Mikayla’s Marvels” made up the largest team with 164 walkers. Each and every year we are amazed by the outpouring of love and support by the community of Roswell. It is incredible and humbling to consider that ten years ago, the Buddy Walk® began in Roswell with only 97 walkers!

Another big “THANK YOU!” goes out to the DSFSENM board. Each board member sacrificed countless hours to plan, organize, contact volunteers, acquire buddywalk3sponsors and recruit participants.

Yes, we are already thinking up ways to make next year’s Buddy Walk® bigger and better than ever! Thank you to everyone who participated. The impact it makes on our foundation and the lives of those we were there to support goes far beyond words. We will see you at the 2015 Buddy Walk®!
